캘리포니아 북부의 작은 지방도시. 젊은이들의 기분 전환은 카스텀 카를 거칠게 몰고 여자 친구를 사귀는 것이다. 커트(Curt Henderson: 리차드 드레이퍼스 분), 스티브(Steve Bolander: 론 하워드 분), 테리(Terry Fields: 찰스 마틴 스미스 분), 존(John Milner: 폴 르 마트 분) 4명은 언제나 몰려다니는 친구들. 고교를 졸업하고 동부 대학으로 가는 커트와 스티브에게 있어서 최후의 밤이 다가온다. 싸움, 카레이스, 연인과의 이별. 이윽고 밤이 새고, 새로운 여행이 시작된다.
