LA의 세일즈맨인 데이비드 맨(데니스 웨버)는 어제밤에 다툰 아내와의 화해도 제대로 하지 못한체 출근을 한다.
급한 영업으로 황량한 사막을 가로지르는 도로를 달리던중 낡은 유조트럭이 느릿느릿 가고 있음을 보게 된다. 급한 마음에 앞질러 주유소에 들어서지만 트럭 역시 주유소에 들어선다.
주유를 하는 동안 아내에게 전화를 걸어 미처 못한 사과를 하고 나서려는데 따라들어온 트럭 역시 곧이어 따라온다. 이윽고 맹렬한 속도로 따라붙은 트럭을 앞서 보내지만...
