1941년 대부분 신참 병사들이 승선한 독일 잠수함 U-96. 병사들은 처음의 흥분과 기대와 반대로 시간이 흐를수록 한정된 공간에서 오는 답답함과 우울함을 느낀다. 그러던 어느 날 처음으로 운반선을 호위하는 영국군과의 교전이 벌어지고 간신히 승리한 그들은 전쟁의 공포를 직접 체험한다. 크리스마스 직전의 어느 날 이들에게 영국군 본거지인 지브롤터 해협을 통과하라는 명령이 떨어지는데 이것은 자살 행위와 다름 없는 명령이다. 적지를 향하던 U-96은 폭탄에 맞아 바닷속 깊이 가라앉고 군인들은 공포에 휩쓸린다. (최성진)
