1900년대 초, 사람들을 돕기 위해 쿵푸를 연마한 진선은 자신의 의형제 대선과 함께 정의를 위해 마약상의 아편을 모두 태워버리지만, 도망치는 과정에서 아우 대선이 목숨을 잃게 된다. 훗날 진선은 무도관의 관장이 되어 후배양성에 힘쓰지만, 죽은 의형제의 가족을 찾지 못한 죄책감에 괴로워하며 지낸다. 한편 당시 상해의 지하 세계에서 ‘흑권 시합’이라는 잔인한 무술 대결이 펼쳐지고 있었는데, 주최 측에서 명문정파의 사범인 진선 앞으로 초대장을 보내는데
