시골마을의 초등학생 석이(이영수)는 요양차 내려온 윤초시의 증손녀 연이(조윤숙)를 개울가에서 만난다. 연이가 자신에게 관심을 보이는 것이 기쁘지만 쑥쓰러운 마음에 무뚝뚝하게 외면하곤 한다. 그러나 며칠 째 학교를 나오지 않던 연이가 학교에 오자 석이는 용기를 내 말을 걸고 함께 놀러간다. 단풍놀이를 하던 둘은 돌아오는 길에 소나기를 만나고 오두막에서 모닥불을 피우며 소나기가 그치기를 기다린다. 비를 많이 맞아 앓고 났던 연이는 개울가에서 석이를 만나 읍
