해적, 인디언, 의적이 되길 꿈꾸며 조용한 마을을 시끄럽게 만드는 귀여운 악동 톰 소여는 구두쇠 영감 호스 윌리엄스의 장례식에서 그가 생전에 숨긴 보물이 있다는 이야기를 듣는다. 어느 날, 톰은 허클베리 핀과 사마귀를 뗄 수 있다는 미신을 실행하기 위해 늦은 밤에 공동묘지로 가는데, 우연히 무덤을 도굴하는 인디언 조와 머프 포터, 로빈슨 의사의 싸움을 엿보게 되고 인디언 조가 로빈슨 의사를 죽이는 장면을 목격하지만 톰과 허클베리는 침묵의 맹세를 한다.
