정숙은 남편을 여의고 6살난 옥희와 시어머니와 함께 지낸다. 어느날 학교 선생으로 부임하는 한선호가 사랑방에 하숙을 들게 된다. 옥희는 사랑방 손님을 따르고 선호와 정숙은 서로 마음이 끌림을 느낀다. 정숙과 선호는 암암리에 설레이는 마음과 함께 연민의 정을 갖는다. 식모인 서산댁이 임신을 해서 선호가 의심을 받지만 계란 장수와의 일로 밝혀지고 그러던 중 옥희의 그림이 전람회에 당선되어 정숙은 선호와 함께 서울에서 하루를 즐긴다. 그 후 할머니는 두 사람
