곽진동은 어릴 적부터 무술을 연마해 나라를 구하려 했으나,
미종권이 부드럽다는 점에 만족하지 못하고 김벽사를 스승으로 모셔 몸을 보호하는 신공을 연마해내고자 한다.
곽진동은 금강문에서 무술을 익히는 과정에서 금강역근환을 먹고 금강주위법을 익히면서 점차 몸이 강해지고, 무술의 내공이 깊어진다.
그러나 아버지의 천식을 치료하기 위해 아버지 곽천분에게 ‘금강역근환’을 먹인 곽진동은 아버지와 함께 아편의 독을 입게 된다.
