천조(이경영)와 같은 고아원에서 자란 지수(강석현)는 지방유지인 개신교 장로의 집에 입양된다. 지수는 새 누이동생이 될 지혜(옥소리)를 만나 사랑을 느끼지만 양부의 뜻대로 서울 신학대학에 입학한다. 지혜가 지방 미대에 입학하자 떨어져 있게 되는 두 사람, 하지만 사랑은 더욱 절실해진다. 술집 종업원인 경애는 지수에게 접근하지만 지혜 때문에 좌절하고 히로뽕에 손을 댄다. 지수는 그녀를 구출하려다가 술집 폭력배들의 폭력에 굴복하고 학교를 뛰쳐나온다. 양부에
