1926년, 당대 최고의 오페라 가수였던 송단평은 대지주의 딸인 두운언과 진실한 사랑을 나누지만, 가수라는 이유로 운언 부모의 반대에 부딪히게 된다. 시장의 아들과 억지로 결혼하라는 운언 부모님의 명령에, 죽음을 각오한 단평과 운언은 사랑의 도피행을 결심하지만 도중에 발각되고만다. 운언 부모님의 사주에 의해 단평은 오페라하우스에 갇힌 채 화염에 휩싸이게 되며, 운언은 감금당한다. 며칠 후, 단평의 죽음을 전해들은 운언은 엄청난 충격에 정신이 이상해져버리
