당 말기, 변경의 오래된 묘지에서 자라던 천년 묵은 귀목이 해와 달의 정기를 흡수해 요괴가 된다. 나무의 몸이라 묘지에서 10리 밖으로 나갈 수 없는 귀목요괴는 화신술을 쓸 계획을 세우지만, 마침 군사 정보를 염탐하러 왔던 혈동과 골부인이 화신술을 중단시키고 귀목요괴에게 중상을 입힌다. 귀목요괴는 회복을 위해 성 안의 장정들을 마구 잡아 피를 빨기 시작한다.

장정들이 실종되자 흑의위 통령 곽평은 수배령을 내리고, 요괴 사냥꾼 류의는 성에 가득
