셜록은 한 친구로부터 한 은행 침입사건을 해결해달라는 부탁을 받는다. 조사 결과 침입자는 아무것도 훔치지 않았으며, 단지 벽면에 의문의 기호를 그려놓고는 사라진 것으로 드러났다. 그러나 수사 도중 한 은행직원의 시체가 발견되고, 셜록은 일련의 사건들이 중국 밀수조직과 연관된 것임을 밝혀낸다.
