아프가니스탄에서 부상을 입은 채 영국으로 돌아온 군의관 존 왓슨. 전쟁의 기억을 떨치지 못한 채 괴로운 나날을 보내고 있던 왓슨은 우연히 천재탐정 셜록 홈즈를 알게 되고 그의 룸메이트가 된다. 그리고 자신의 법의학 지식을 바탕으로 홈즈의 고문역할을 하게 된다. 한편 런던에서는 의문의 자살 사건이 이어져, 사회가 혼란에 빠진다. 홈즈는 이 사건들이 자살이 아닌 살인임을 자신하며 왓슨과 수사에 나서게 된다.
